On October 27, 2021, the Minnesota Northstar Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Program concluded the local portion of its second annual Interprofessional Geriatric Case Competition. The case competition is a virtual event in which student teams from Saint Louis University and the University of Minnesota compete against each other as they present their plans of treatment for a fictional case dealing with a complex patient. The goal of the competition is for the student participants to improve their geriatric skills and interprofessional collaboration.

This year, 87 undergraduate and graduate students from 17 UMN programs participated in the competition, which centered on a case dealing with a fictional older female patient with complex symptoms. The teams' care plans addressed key factors concerning the patient, such as living in a rural community and suffering from long-term COVID-19 complications, among her other chronic health conditions. The students created an innovative 25-minute pre-recorded electronic case presentation. Teams of interprofessional faculty and community experts volunteered to serve as judges and coaches for the presentations. The top-rated teams from this round of the competition gave their presentations via a VoiceThread recording.

The top team from the University of Minnesota competition included students in these programs:

The top team representing the UMN had a physician coach, Todd James, MD. Dr. James is from another geriatrics workforce enhancement program at University of California San Francisco, where he is the site director of engagement for the UCSF GWEP Community Partner, Contra Costa Health.

"I am impressed with the performance, creativity, and high-quality work done by all of the teams," said Kris Talley, PhD, APRN, CNP, FGSA, associate professor, UMN School of Nursing, and MN GWEP co-director. "It was exciting to view their presentations and know that they were building critical interprofessional teamwork skills and knowledge on the care of older adults. I am so grateful to the coaches and judges who volunteered their time and expertise to make this such a successful event."

One student participant commented, "Having a month to complete the project was helpful, especially because everyone had different busy times in their schedules. The resources listed in each team's folder were very helpful. The rubric and guidelines were thorough. I like the idea of picking the brains of people you know (nurses, doctors, people who work with older adults, etc.) to get more insight into the case and interprofessional relationships."

Thank you and congratulations to all participants! Below are the members of the second and third place teams, with names and programs:
