About the End of Life Resource Collection: Curating a death and dying library for health professionals - an article by University Libraries.
A new in-depth self-directed program, called Dementia-Friendly Dental Practices Advanced Training for clinical dental providers, goes online this month. It includes guidance on providing a safe environment, addressing ethical and legal issues and appropriate procedural modifications. Additionally, the Dementia-Friendly @ Work for Healthcare training prepares dental office staff to recognize signs of dementia and offers basic information and measures for more effective interactions. This shorter staff training is live online or in person. All are led by Stephen K. Shuman, DDS, MS, FGSA, FICD.

The 17th annual Caring for People with Memory Loss Day was hosted by MN GWEP co-director Joe Gaugler, PhD, and Ashley Millenbah, MS.
A new documentary about caregivers, "How to Care," is now available on the Twin Cities Public Television PBS website. It will be broadcast at various times over the next three years, starting in June. Thank you to HRSA for supporting this work via the MN GWEP and Dr. Jon Hallberg, who served as producer.

MN GWEP has co-created a new online library resource called Death Dying and End of Life Resources. This library is designed in consultation with the leaders of the GWEP's Age Friendly Care and Education Collection, which is the primary resource repository used by many GWEPs from around the nation. Some resources are cross-referenced in both libraries, and both are hosted by the Resource Center of the National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education.

A continuing education workshop at Saint Thomas University featured a presentation by Dr. Ben Rosenstein and Teresa Schicker from the Minnesota Northstar Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program, focusing on Age-Friendly Health Systems.
First-Ever Study of Minnesota Nursing Home Medical Directors Sheds Light on Hidden Challenges and Opportunities featuring MN GWEP activity directors Teresa McCarthy MD, MS, CMD and Rajean Moone PhD, LNHA, LALD, FGSA.
The 2025 Gerontologist of the Year Award from Minnesota Gerontological Society was awarded to Rajean Moone PhD, LNHA, LALD, FGSA. Dr. Moone is faculty director of Long Term Care Administration in the College of Continuing and Professional Studies, Associate Director of Education for Center for Healthy Aging and Innovation in the School of Public Health, Member of the Interprofessional Geriatrics Coordinating Council for the MN GWEP in the Office of Academic Clinical Affairs, and activity director of several activities in the Minnesota Northstar Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Project. Dr. Moone co-directs the Minnesota Geriatrics ECHO for the aging services sector. Dr. Moone also chairs the system-wide Age-Friendly Council at the University of Minnesota.
Dr. Steve Shuman is noted as "The Guest of Honor" at the upcoming annual meeting of the Minnesota Dental Association. He is honored in recognition of reinforcing the essential connections between oral health and quality of life for aging populations. Dr. Shuman leads a number of important initiatives, including Dementia Friendly Dental Practices and the UMN program Oral Health Services for Older Adults.

"How to Care" is a new film on aging caregiving from the University of Minnesota Medical School’s Center for the Art of Medicine and Hippocrates Cafe Productions. It was chosen to premiere at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Film Festival. This documentary film was supported by the Minnesota Northstar GWEP by an award from the Health Resources and Services Administration in 2024.

Addressing the Needs of an Aging Population Through Health Professions Education: Proceedings of a Workshop (2023) is a book published by National Academies of Science Engineering Medicine, and features MN GWEP expert Teresa McCarthy, MD MS. The National Academies Global Forum on Innovation in Health Professional Education hosted a Fall 2022 workshop, with speakers Teresa McCarthy and Teresa Schicker. Discussions included the composition of the intended health workforce, training requirements for each level of care provider, who would provide the training and education, and in what setting the training would take place. Dr. McCarthy and Ms. Schicker presented to NASEM in a workshop on December 7, 2022.

This is a co-production with the University of Minnesota Medical School’s Center for the Art of Medicine, Twin Cities Public Television, and the John A. Hartford Foundation, with additional support from Tom and Meredith Olson and in academic partnership with the Minnesota Northstar Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program.
