Local Educational Event about Older Adults Seeks Sponsorship

MN GWEP case competition image

The fourth annual Interprofessional Geriatric Case Competition is coming this autumn, and we are seeking sponsors to help support this beneficial interdisciplinary event for students. Sponsors can connect with participants, coaches, and judges through our LinkedIn group and ultimately help develop a workforce that is better equipped to care for older adults.

About the competition

The Minnesota Northstar Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Program (MN GWEP) will host the fourth annual Interprofessional Geriatric Case Competition in autumn 2023. The competition kicks off in September and offers students across several university campuses a unique opportunity to develop interprofessional collaboration skills by creating a patient centered and culturally responsive plan of care for a simulated medically complex older adult. The friendly competition involves not only students from the University of Minnesota campuses, but those from St. Louis University and other Missouri schools. The competition culminates with the University of Minnesota’s top team competing against the winning team from St. Louis University.

Who participates

The leader of the University of Minnesota Interprofessional Geriatric Case Competition is Kristine Talley, PhD, CNP, RN, FGSA, associate professor in the UMN School of Nursing. Every year approximately 80 students from more than 10 different disciplines participate in the competition, including nursing, pharmacy, dentistry, medicine, public health, management, social services, physical/occupational therapies, allied health, liberal arts, and more.

On average, the case competition also engages 50 community experts and faculty members as coaches and judges. Coaches mentor students providing insights and suggestions on their progress as they build their plan of care. Judges decide which student teams made the best plans of care. The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners receive modest financial prizes. All participants receive a subscription to Geriatrics At Your Fingertips®, an annually updated reference that provides quick, easy access to the specific information clinicians need to make decisions about the care of older adults.

The Minnesota Northstar GWEP’s grant is restricted from contributing to financial prizes for students, which is why the GWEP is looking at partnering with community sponsors who want to support interprofessional geriatric education. This experience brings students and potential future employers together in a unique way. Nursing homes have seen an average net loss of 15 percent of employees since the beginning of the Covid pandemic (2023 Long Term Care Imperative Workforce Survey). Therefore, it’s more important than ever to inspire the next generation of geriatric providers and caregivers to give back to this population.

What’s New

We have developed a LinkedIn group for former and current participants to network, including volunteer coaches and judges who are sponsoring the event. The LinkedIn group, MN GWEP Interprofessional Geriatric Case Competition invites students, coaches and judges to connect. This group will give former classmates and future colleagues an opportunity to continue to learn from and with one another. It also gives you the chance to connect with individuals as part of your sponsorship.

About the LinkedIn Group

With our gratitude for your engagement, we invite you to reconnect with your classmates and colleagues in a new LinkedIn Group, MN GWEP Interprofessional Geriatric Case Competition, hosted by the Minnesota Northstar Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program.

Who: The members of this group are past participants of the Minnesota Interprofessional Geriatric Case Competition, community experts in aging services, faculty/instructors/preceptors in health sciences, students and recent graduates. In Minnesota, we have connected nearly 400 participants in the annual competition. This is not a group for employment recruiters, but instead for the learners and event participants of the Minnesota Geriatric Case Competition.

What: A group to share relevant news, research, and career opportunities.

Why: Build professional relationships with health science experts and learners, especially those interested in the care of older adults. After the competition, keep in touch with your expert coach and interprofessional team from the competition.

What this isn’t: This is not a job board.

How we want to engage: Connect on LinkedIn with one other. Let’s keep this a positive environment and learn from each other. Share resources that inform your work!
