With the fourth annual Interprofessional Geriatric Case Competition coming up in autumn 2023, we are hoping to see even more student participants from a variety of disciplines across the University. The case competition offers students – whether they are in public health, liberal arts, nursing, veterinary medicine, law school, or any other field – the beneficial opportunity to work collaboratively with an interprofessional team.

A Path to Hope: New Toolkit Offers Resources to Assess and Prevent Suicide in Older Adults
In this interview, we hear from Merrie J. Kaas, PhD, APRN, PMHCNS, FAAN, author of the Suicide in Older Adults toolkit, created in partnership with the Minnesota Northstar Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program. The toolkit contains resources for teaching learners how to assess and prevent suicide in older adults. Dr. Kaas is professor emeritus at the University of Minnesota School of Nursing and a board certified, practicing psychiatric-mental health clinical nurse specialist. She has decades of geropsychiatric clinical experience and teaching experience in both psychiatric/mental health and gerontological nursing.
UMN Wins Inter-university Interprofessional Geriatric Case Competition
On November 8, 2022, the top scoring teams from the University of Minnesota and St. Louis University went head to head in the Annual Inter-university Geriatric Case Competition, and UMN won.
Workforce Enhancement and Support: GWEP + MAGIC
The Minnesota Association of Geriatrics Inspired Clinicians (MAGIC) 2022 Annual Conference will feature several experts in aging from the University of Minnesota. In addition, the Minnesota Northstar Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program is a sponsor of this year’s conference. The GWEP is excited to partner with MAGIC in our mutual quest to support clinicians and learners who care for older adults in Minnesota.
Geriatric Toolkits Offer Specialized Knowledge to Healthcare Educators
Kristine M. Talley, PhD, CNP, RN, is an associate professor in the School of Nursing at the University of Minnesota. She is also a member of the Minnesota Northstar Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program (MN Northstar GWEP) Administrative Core, a group of experts who manage MN Northstar GWEP activities and work with community partners to direct projects. In this interview, Dr. Talley provides an overview of the MN Northstar GWEP-created geriatric toolkits and how they can serve educators in healthcare disciplines.
